A wonderful antique portrait of Jack Pickford dating to 1920. Jack Pickford was the younger brother of actress Mary Pickford. This photo was taken at a Hartsook studio in California - the studio marking is at the lower right. Fred Harstook was the owner of the California based studio chain, which was one of the largest photo businesses in the world at the time.
This photograph measures 7.5" by 9.5" in size and is printed on fairly thick-stock matte cardstock. The photograph is signed "Sincerely / Jack Pickford" in faint green ink near his knees. This signature was likely much more bold when it was originally signed - it has since become somewhat faint and faded. This, combined with the green color ink against the dark sepia background makes it almost entirely illegible unless viewed carefully under the right lighting conditions.
The photo is still in very good overall condition for its age, showing only minor wear. There is a tack hole near the top of the photo - likely how it was displayed by the original collector in its day. The photo also exhibits some minor corner wear/rounding and there is a faint surface line near the bottom edge. The back of the photo has some mild discoloration and there is a handwritten note by the original collector reading "Daniel Stees / receive April 5, 1920."
A tremendous piece of history for the photography collector or silent film aficionado. selling
