Hand-carved from a selling single piece of Kisii soapstone Family of 3 made of soap stone referred to as Kisii stone. Kisii is the region in Eastern part of Kenya where these stones are mined, and also loosely means the group of people who for generations have produced the most creative objects out of these naturally occurring rocks.
The family carving represents the foundation of the society as observed by the creators of these pieces. Family sizes vary from family to family and from community to community as symbolized by the carvings. various shades of soap stone can also symbolize tribes, communities, or races. The dance simply symbolizes celebration of life's simple things like a beautiful day, a seasonal event like a bumper harvest, or a full moon.
