Lapis Lazuli has been a highly esteemed stone from the earliest times in human history. From its use in ancient Egypt (imported all the way from Afghanistan) to today it is famed for its rich color. It was also used as a source for the finest blue 'ultramarine' pigment, which was used especially for depictions of the virgin Mary's robes in European paintings. Afghanistan has historically been the major selling producer of this stone, and is still the premiere source for fine lapis.
