Jolles Original selling Petit Point Evening Bag, So Collectible!

In 1923 Vienna, needlepoint was a dying art. This is what Ida Jolles learned when she tried to order needlepoint upholstery for an American cousin. She found the last of the traditional "stitchers," and once the seat covers were done, hired the group to make a few needlepoint purses. Thus, Jolles Original was born, a company that grew to employ 20,000 craftspeople, mostly women, many who worked from home.

Here, we offer a classic Jolles creation, likely made in the selling 1930s, shortly before Ida escaped Austria ahead of the Nazi invasion. (Note: she became a U.S. citizen and an international businesswoman with operations in Belgium, New York, and Shanghai. Yes, she was pals with Chaing Kai-shek.) This beautiful and history-laden piece features multi-colored blossoms and leaves, looking like springtime, against a neutral, cream-colored background. The frame is decorative brass, topped by a fancy, filigree clasp with a crown-like appearance. There is a linked brass chain that crosses over the bag and measures 12". Across the bottom and sides of the bag is a garland of sorts, a border of stitched mini-flowers, feeling like a bonus. The bag is lined in cream-colored satin fabric, with two interior pockets. One of these holds a mini change purse. There, you will also find the all-important tag reading, "Jolles/ORIGINAL/MADE IN AUSTRIA."

Condition is very good. The bag is fully functional, but has minor signs of wear in the form of spots here and there on the outside; inside, the spottiness is more noticeable and includes a small pink smear that we imagine is residual lipstick or rouge. Sold as is. Still a beauty.
