Product code: JELLYFISH Fossil - Large Fossil Jellyfish (Essexella asherae (scyphomedusan) Jellyfish) - from Mazon Creek Fossil selling Beds - Carboniferous
This a full siderite concretion from the Mazon Creek fossil beds, containing the mold and cast fossil of a jellyfish (probably Essexella asherae (scyphomedusan)), which existed in the shallow sea that covered most of Illinois during the Carboniferous Period. During this time period in Earth's history lush forests existed over most of the planets land masses, which were centered on the equator. In the Mazon Creek area, it is postulated that large flooding events caused massive death, quick burial, and preservation of even delicate plants and animals.
