This is a production piece. The original design came to me when I was re-reading some of the wonderful stories that Mary Renault set in selling the world of ancient Greece. Greek mythology linked wine making to the supernatural world of nymphs and satyrs and the god Dionysus--who was not only the patron of the grape, but also the god of metamorphosis, madness, and the theater. Definitely a god for all seasons--even in Texas, a state heavy on non-drinking Southern Baptists, yet now one of the biggest wine producers in the country.
The satyr's horned head is appropriately surmounted with bunches of grapes. At a size 7, this would be a pinkie ring for a guy or a pointer finger ring for a lady. It weighs 11 dwt--comfortable but substantial. A great statement piece for a wine lover--or a performer who understands the ultimate roots of his/her calling.
